Brett LaMar with his beautiful wife, Brook, moved to Puerto Vallarta in June of 2015 after falling in love with the terrain. He says “It is a very unique place with the transition of the jungle filled mountains, flowing down into the cityscape and out to the bay. I also love the diversity in the food scene from street-side taco stands to fine dining. We have endless affordable options. The people of Mexico are so charming, and the majority are very kind and welcoming to ex-pats living in their country.”
Before moving to Vallarta Brett was a US Marine for four years. He then became an Entrepreneur running multiple startup companies prior to moving to Mexico. He and Brook also lived in Bangkok, Thailand for three years as ex-pats as well.
My decision to write about Brett as he’s not a “La Cruz’er” is because he can answer the question that is so relevant these days. “Where do I get travel and health insurance?” As my hubby and I have been very pleased with the service Brett has given us for our medical insurance I turned to him asking where our guests could obtain short-term travel and health insurance and was pleased to learn that he is a broker for that as well.
Brett is an independent broker which allows him to work with multiple insurance companies so he can quote and secure the best short and/or long-term health, life, and travel insurance policies for your needs. He told me he enjoys “The flexibility of being an independent broker as I can set my own pace; although I am a workaholic so it’s a downfall sometimes.” Brett also shared “The biggest reward is when I see my client’s insurance policies pay off whereas if they didn’t secure a policy, they would have experienced financial hardship. The biggest challenge is when I hear leads say they are choosing to self-insure. I have seen and been a part of too many GoFundMe and charity campaigns to raise funds for medical bills. I think it should be a priority for ex-pats to make healthcare insurance part of their retirement plan. 99% of my clients are Expats and Tourists”.
Brett is inspired by people who take risks and aren’t afraid to be uncomfortable in settings foreign to them. He and his wife enjoy the life that living in a waterfront community offers such as paddle boarding; their favorite place to paddle is Los Arcos. As always, I asked Brett if he likes to cook at home “Yes, we cook often at home and my favorite dish to make is homemade pizzas all from scratch: dough and sauce.
Brett welcomes the changes and gentrification that Vallarta is going through. He told me “It’s not a very old city and many of the buildings have become dilapidated over time so I welcome the modern builds as of late. I wish they would do a bit more to preserve some of the Vallarta feel and impose height restrictions.” He likes that more younger folks are moving here due to remote working and believes that is very good for the city.
When asked “What one thing do you think people around town’ don’t know about you?” Brett answered, “I used to own one of the very first medical marijuana dispensaries in the state of Colorado and lobbied the local government for laws that changed our state constitution.” Bravo!! He’s most proud of becoming a United States Marine.
Brett’s favorite quote:
“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life”
Brett suggests everyone visit the beautiful Vallarta Nayarit area. He says “The weather is impeccable and the bay pristine, protected from both intense weather and sharks. He especially likes the large variety of food options; restaurants and for home cooking. If you choose to move here real estate is affordable and the state-of-the-art medical facilities with qualified medical staff exceeds the care you receive north of the Border
